Wordpress 2.5 Stable Is Now Available

Wordpress 2.5 Stable Is Now Available
Finally! Wordpress 2.5 stable is out. Wordpress.org has also been redesigned to match the new Admin Panel colors. Note that the Host requirements have changed with this version, you now need PHP 4.3 or greater and MySQL 4.0 or greater.

Since rc1 they did release an rc2 but there was at least one bug with the wp-includes/taxonomy.php file. This has since been fixed. I am currently in the process of redoing this theme to take advantage of WP 2.5’s features.

I shall be incorporating gravatar icons in the comments area, so for those of you that do write comments here hop along to gravatar.com and signup.

Before upgrading be sure to check your plugins compatability. There are also some database table changes in this version. I strongly recommend that you head on over to the WordPress Upgrade Preparation Checklist by Lorelle before you start your upgrade.

Now that the stable version has been released I shall be adding tutorials both here and in the upcoming Wordpress theme ebook. If you want to keep updated on the ebook you can follow me on Twitter.

  1. Great Stuff. Keep us posted on any bugs or issues you come across. I am very tempted to make the change, but likely to hang back for abit, just to see.

  3. The upgrade couldn’t have gone smoother. All in all I spent about 20-30 minutes on the upgrade from the time I started my backups to the time I finished updating the tables in the DB. Overall, it was the easiest upgrade I’ve done…and the new dashboard is fabulous!

  4. Backup Wordpress database and template? I did neither!

Luckily no mess ups for me! ;)

Hopefully no hidden surprises for me later on.

The only plugin I had to deactivate is Simple Tags, as it is not compatible with Wordpress 2.5

Another plugin that I had to update to the latest version is NextGEN Gallery, but I intend to remove this plugin for a long time already.

Why I want to stop using this plugin? Well, I think it is quite a resource hog perhaps? Its javascript takes quite a while to load, according to pingdom tools.

Need to “extract” all the images out first though.

  5. @All: The general consensus seems to be that this is on of the easiest upgrades yet BUT there are some gotcha’s with a few plugins. I haven’t done the upgrade yet, will do once I’ve revamped this theme for 2.5. I’m planning this for the weekend.

  6. This is a problem with uploading images and I believe that quite many people are experiencing it.

There is a fix to it though, involves adding some lines of code to the .htaccess file.

Not sure if it works if the blog is not installed in the root path.

  7. @Deimos: thx for that, have you got a link to the solution?
