WordPress 2.5 - Changes, Bug Fixes and Guides

by admin

Wordpress 2.5 Stable Is Now Available
Now that Wordpress 2.5 has been out for a while, the bugs and problems have risen to the top. Some are a little lost on where to find stuff and find things, here’s a handy FAQ.

If you haven’t yet upgraded to 2.5, you should check plugin compatibility

Changes

WordPress 2.5 and the Object Cache… discusses changes in the caching systems.

When improving a system not everything can stay backwards compatible, in the case of Wordpress the database has had some table changes.

If you develop plugins then you will need to read up on WordPress 2.5 Plugin Settings Pages Style Guide

Bug Fixes

Some are having problems uploading images, I have seen a few fixes, but here’s the most comprehensive solution to the problem.

If your blog uses the Popularity plugin, instead of waiting for it to be upgraded you can fix it yourself by going to line 59 in popularity.php:

require('../../wp-blog-header.php');

and then replace it with:

require('../wp-blog-header.php');

WP-Print does not work with v2.5 but you can, and really should, create a print.css file instead.

WP-Polls will not work with a fresh install of Wordpress 2.5.

Guides

Per User Custom Stylesheet in WordPress 2.5. If you have multiple authors, each one can have their own color scheme in the Admin area. Or you can try out the Fluency plugin which gives the Admin area a complete and useful makeover.

For those of you wanting to experiment with the new gallery features, here’s a guide from the codex.

  1. Although I have not yet upgraded, this will surely go in the save folder for when I do…as well as pass it along if someone needs it.

Keep ‘em comin’! I’m as un-techy as one can be.

  4. I do not upgrade to 2.5 yet, but this sure will be handy to me once I upgraded to 2.5. Thanks.

  5. Yeah. I’m already using 2.5 and happy. It’s cool and haven’t experienced any bug yet. :D

  6. Thanks for the list of solutions to things. The photo thing is BIG. In fact textI took a VERY different approach in my 2.5 review (I’ll give you a hint-it’s negative). But I’ve calmed down a little since last week.

It was only today that I discovered the popularity plugin-and of course it didn’t work. The hack doesn’t work for me either. A few other people are having problems too. 1)The main reasons being the quotes ‘ ‘ need to be from your keyboard instead of copied and pasted. And 2)the folder your WP is installed in. Like mine is in the root directory, some people in /blog, so you either have to add and not subtract one or two ../

  8. Thanks! We upgraded, had a few things to scramble with on several blogs, but all in all it’s going very well. Your source for help, should we need it, is appreciated :)

  9. Firstly, seems Im not getting your email updates at the moment, which is quite strange. Need to look into that…

Back to point. Still not yet had the ‘bottle’ to upgrade yet, things are working OK for me at the moment, but ever so tempting now that there does not yet to be any significant scare stories. Have been burnt before jumping into a new update, specifically with Apple OS updates, like the one where if you turned on your Mac with a Firewire device joined, it would wipe the drive clean. This was OS X about 3 years ago. Lost everything…

I have heard of one person loosing their entire WP install after 2.5, but I believe that was a careless act on there behalf. So a lesson there.

  10. GS, not necessarily.

A cousin of mine lost his WP install with 2.5 as well. I’m not sure it’s carelessness on his behalf - he’s very experienced in the IT/Internet field.

  11. @Dave: Though I like Flash, I think it was a bad choice for the uploading. 1> 99% of the time I copy and paste from the web quotes screw up and I have to re-type them, probably because of the encoding used. 2> If the complete install of WP is inside a folder then you shouldn’t need more or less ‘../’ as the addressing is relative.

@Graham: I’ve upgraded my local server and that went okay, I’m currently redoing this theme for 2.5 when that’s done I’ll upgrade the site as well. I want to do this sooner rather than later as Technorati are no longer indexing sites with older versions of Wordpress on them :(

Are you getting the email updates yet?

@Michael: Yup… I’ve heard of a couple of these as well. I think it’s got something to do with the host’s configuration.

  12. Hold on a sec, Technorati is not indexing below 2.5 or below maybe 2.3.3 or what?

Scribbled by Dennis Edell on 12/04/08 at 5:31 pm
  13. @Dennis: Here’s the original link:
Vulnerable WordPress Blogs Not Being Indexed. It seems to me to infer that only v2.5 will be indexed, but it is a bit ambiguous as to whether 2.3.3 is okay or not.

  14. Well that kinda sucks don’t it. Let’s see what it looks like with a couple hundred thousand blogs less :-)
