Deep Linking Comments
by admin
This evening I was taking note of all the comments for the $100 competition I’m running and I noticed that everyone has entered their homepage as their URL in the Comment Form. Why don’t you deep-link to individual posts?
Here’s a piece of advice. Whenever you write a comment don’t enter the homepage as the URL, instead use the url of your latest post.
Now why would you do this?
- If people like your site and recommend it to others, the link is usually to the homepage so the link growth to the homepage will look after itself to some extent.
- Say Google comes along to your site and sees a couple of thousand links to your homepage but ZERO to any other page, it’s likely they will think something is up.
- More pages will have the chance of getting a PR ranking, which is a good thing. Say you have eight keyword phrases you are trying to rank for. Now they don’t have to be all on the homepage. Each phrase can have it’s own page, giving it a better possibility of higher SERPs.
This is not just for comments, this should be part of your link building strategy so that not only will your homepage rank high, but your inner pages will too. That will in turn give your site a strong backbone of high PR individual pages as a whole and will rank them higher in SERPs.
Another advantage is that if your comment is related to the topic of one of your posts and you use it’s url, when a visitor clicks the link and finds the related post they are more likely to read other posts and become a regular (if the content is good).
The only time I use the homepage URL is if a site uses the comment luv plugin, I have found that it displays the authors name instead of the post’s title. I’ll leave you with a question: Would you rather have all your PR on a page that is constantly changing or on many pages that are rock solid?

That is very interesting.
I’ll give it a try right now (though it is convenient to leave it alone since i’ve been here before and the form is all filled out!).
So, I put the most recent post info (an article thankfully!) into the box above this comment box. That works ok for me since I sign off with…

which DOES go to the ‘homepage’ of the site.
So it seems that we benefit more by going directly to a post.
If I’m posting to my blog every day yet I only comment on a few blogs a day, will this really help?
You have definitely given me much food for thought…

For some reason I didn’t think that was “the thing to do” but you make some good points. I’ve been wondering about it lately and now you’ve gone and made up my mind
It does make sense.
Hmm, very interesting. You are my first “guinea pig” then ;). I will try this approach for a while as it does make sense. I use commentluv on my site, and I hope a lot of people start using it as it is a great plugin. Unfortunately it is only for Wordpress I think.
Am not against this.. and i do comment in different pattern… The best way i think is to comment with the relevant url.. for example if there is a post about building traffic, the u can comment with the link of the article you have written in your blog. and not just the recent article. ( That helps to increase SERP as the link is relevant to what is mentioned in the post)
@Pam: Not all post are created equal
I usually pick my last best post and use that until I make another what I consider as a good post. You could also target your pillar posts.
@Claire: At first it might seem odd but really it’s odd not to
Hi Colin!
You mention ‘pillar post’ and I haven’t heard that term before. Do you write about this somewhere on your blog? Is there a definition you might give (i think i get the idea, just want to know for sure).
I appreciate your hard work here at CK Marketing!

I was guilty of doing this, but great article. Caused me to re-think my strategy. Thanks for posting it.
Nice! this is one of thebest tips about bloging that i found in these couple of weeks.
@Pam: These are posts that are longer than average (750 words approx but at least 500) that thoroughly covers a topic within the blogs subject area. The content is timeless, original and unique. It is wise to take your time over them as they can set the theme or mood of the blog. It is also useful if you do a lot of keyword research so that they have a lot of SEO power to attract the Search Engines and other bloggers.
@Steve: It’s not guilt
It’s just not an obvious thing to do but really it’s a must do.
It’s something I have been thinking about doing and linking to a post related to the post you are commenting provides more information for readers.
I will start with this comment. Thanks!
@Stephan: thx
and I reciprocated, left a question for ya…
Great suggestion! I’ll definitely utilize this, starting now
@Erica: Don’t forget, if you’re a frequent blogger then target your better posts.
Thanks for the great tips and I will definitely start doing that.
@Sarah: You’re welcome
Thanks for the insight. I’ll apply this deep henceforth. Happy new year!
This is a great tip.Very informative and very logical.From now onwards, I will be practicing deep linking starting from right here.
