The March $100 winner, a problem and a rant

by admin

First of all, who won the $100 for March? There were over 1,740 entries, we drew our seed numbers and averaged them to find the winning entry, which was entry #606. That entry belongs to diggnfordiamonds.com who made a comment posted at GorillaSushi.com. Who will be getting $100 cold, hard PayPal cash from JoeTech as soon as he or she replies to the email.

How are you chances for winning in April? Obviously, the more entries you have, the higher the chances of winning. Note that over half of the entries are posts. Posts are a no brainer, a template is provided in the content post.

The next bit of news… If you have been wondering where I have been, I have had a problem with my PC. Friday morning, I had dropped about 20 cards when the PC restarted. It shutdown then as it came back up it froze just after the memory check.

I put this down to a PSU problem, as my PSU died about 6mths ago and I had a spare 400W one, so I used that as a temporary fix as I prefer to use at least a 650W. Friday was a busy day for me, so it was Saturday before I could get a new PSU.

I put the new PSU in and got the same result!! I disconnected the HD’s and tried re-booting, no luck. So it looks like it’s a motherboard problem which is a hassle.

It’s a self-built Athlon 64 3Ghz system I built a few years back. I don’t know if you can even get MB’s that still support that CPU now, so it looks like I will be building another system, which means new CPU, MB and graphics card.

In the meantime I’m using a G4 Mac I had lying around. It’s only 800Mhz but has 1Gb of memory. I cleaned it up and connected it last night, updated the OS (10.4.12) and installed Flock as it was my preferred browser. However, I am using Safari for card dropping as it is so fast.

<rant>One thing I have found, using the slow Mac, is that I am really starting to hate most blogspot blogs, if they do fully load they take forever but there’s only a small percentage of them that are both decent blogs and load in a reasonable time. A lot of them just lock up the system. And then they are plastered with ads and widgets, usually the full page ad or the "This blog sponsored by…" Ugghhh!!</rant>

With the PC out of commission for a while, I’m kinda screwed in four ways:

  • I’ve lost all my bookmarks.
  • I’ve lost the updated theme for this blog.
  • I’ve lost my research notes.
  • My web development software is all on PC.

I do have WebDesign by Rage Software but when I type it doubles every letter like tthhiiss!! If anyone knows how to fix that, I have some ec’s waiting for you :)

For the entreCarders, thx to those that continued to visit and drop thru the weekend, it is appreciated. I have tried to remember the one’s I normally drop on, if I missed you, drop to remind me. I shall catch up on the comments this afternoon.

  1. Ouch.. that hurts - I hope you get the issues resolved, been there on a couple of occasions where you sit back and go.. not possible! Then you realize the work you have in front of you to get it back where you want it!

Im sure the droppers will all understand!

  2. I had hosting trouble this weekend, and my blogs were suspended until I got it taken care of. What a way to spend a weekend, eh? And I know what you mean about those blogspot blogs. I started out on blogspot, so I don’t think blogspotters are bad or whatever, but there are some that I avoid now. They just take too long, and so many seem like junk.

  3. I was worried about you. I have seen a lot of sites with no posts because of illness. I am glad it was not you that was sick. I truly hope my site is not one of those that takes forever to load. I try to keep the ads to a minimum and I do not have music or flash. I am so glad you are back.

  4. Jeepers creepers, when it rains it pours huh. I feel for ya for sure.

I know you said that you build your own. However if you’re ever “not in the mood” or whatever, let me know. A very good friend of mines, builds some awesome systems.

She gets top-of-the-line parts for junk yard prices (and won’t reveal her sources damn it!) :-)

Sorry Blogspotters, I now avoid you almost like the plague…slow loads, pain to comment and sometimes a pain to subscribe.

When I drop, I love to read and comment…if I read/comment more then 2 or more posts, I usually subscribe.

  5. Now I know you can’t be talking about me.lol I have had computer problems too and it is bad. I would like to ask a question. I have a gateway laptop with IE on it and it only has so much memory on it unless you put more on. What is the best browser to have. Firefox? and what is Safari? I have never heard of it before but I have been reading about it here lately.

  6. @Susie: Will be on the G4 for a while, until I can scrape together the cash for a MB, processor and gfx card. It’s just a little slow for the 3d work I do.

@Heather: Yeah… I saw that in the forums. Looks like we both had a great weekend…

@EttaRose: thx. I don’t have a doctor and so I’m never sick ;) Your site loads okay for me, it’s those sites with loads of useless widgets on that I detest.

@Dennis: Is your friend in England? There are some decent blogspots, but they are few and far between, and I rarely comment on them due to the hassle of it all.

@Carol: Why? Were your ears burning? ;) It’s not the fastest, but it is reasonable. If a site is to slow. has sound or fs ads then there’s no drop.

What is the best browser to have? For everyday use either FireFox or Flock, I prefer Flock. Safari was Apple’s answer to IE when they finally dropped IE5.5. It has recently become available for Windows as well, though I never tried it on the PC. Being stuck on the Mac for a while I tried Safari for dropping and it is very fast at rendering sites. When I rebuild my PC I will be installing Safari on it. But I’ll keep Flock for everyday browsing because I like the add ons.

  7. Oops no, she’s upstate NY…I suppose the shipping might be a bit high.

I installed flock as it is touted as the “social media browser” which I am getting more and more into…i hope to start using it soon when i have enough time, at least one day to really look it over.

  10. @Dennis: I had a feeling she was stateside, oh well… with the exchange rate, it would probably be cheaper for me to pick it up ;)
@Eric: Have a word with Joe over at joetech.com as he runs the competition.

  12. […] is just an update on what’s going on here. As I mentioned in The March $100 winner, a problem and a rant, my PC crapped out on me last week. I have a Mac 800Mhz G4 that I use for testing web stuff on and […]
